mountune has been building Cosworth YB engines since the platform was in current production. From Robb Gravett’s 1990 British Touring Car Championship winning Sierra RS500 to the works Ford rally engines that followed, including François Delecour’s Monte Carlo winning Escort RS Cosworth in 1994, the YB forms an important part of mountune’s competition history.
That experience continues today. YB engines are built, rebuilt and validated at Hutton by a team with decades of experience working with the platform, with each engine prepared around its intended application and technical requirements.
Every engine is validated on our dyno before delivery, whether a complete build or a targeted rebuild, allowing performance and reliability to be assessed under controlled conditions before it returns to the car.
Every YB programme is defined by the engine, its application and the regulations it is required to meet. From inspection and targeted rebuilds to complete engine builds, the scope of work is established around what each individual engine requires.
A comprehensive strip and inspection establishes the condition of the engine and its components. Critical dimensions and clearances are measured, components are assessed and documented, providing a clear technical basis for any work required.
Each rebuild is defined by the condition and requirements of the individual engine. From targeted component replacement to a comprehensive refresh, the scope is established following inspection to ensure work is carried out where it is required.
Complete YB engines are built from the block upwards to suit the specification, application and regulations of the car. Components are selected, assembled and documented throughout the build, creating a fully traceable engine prepared and validated for its intended use.
This Sierra RS500 retains the specification appropriate to its period while incorporating carefully considered changes to support the way the car is driven today. The engine was prepared around its historic specification, with drivability and reliability developed for regular competition use, before being dyno validated at Hutton.
The Cosworth YB powered road, touring and rally cars across more than a decade of competition, evolving significantly between applications. While each shared the same engine architecture, the demands of circuit racing, rallying and road use resulted in very different specifications.
Understanding those differences is fundamental to every YB programme we undertake. Each engine is built around its application, period regulations and intended use, ensuring the specification is appropriate to the car rather than applying a standard approach.
Competition YB specifications vary significantly between cars, championships and periods. Where an engine is required to meet a specific technical or homologation regulation, every aspect of the build is developed around those requirements. Components, specification and assembly are carefully controlled and documented, ensuring the finished engine is both compliant and appropriate to its intended application.
