Since 1980

Our story

FOUR DECADES OF ENGINEERING, RACING AND PERFORMANCE.

mountune was founded in 1980 by David Mountain, following years spent competing, building engines and developing his engineering experience. What began with competition engines for autocross, rallycross and minicross soon developed into a relationship with Ford that would help define the business for decades to come.

The Cosworth era marked a significant step forward. mountune built Robb Gravett’s engines from his production saloon days through to his 1990 British Touring Car Championship title in the Sierra RS500, before moving into works rally programmes with Ford Motorsport. Success followed across international competition, including François Delecour’s victory at the 1994 Monte Carlo Rally and Colin McRae’s Safari Rally win in the Focus.

That experience continued into some of motorsport’s most demanding programmes. mountune supplied Formula Palmer Audi for 12 consecutive seasons, built every engine for the relaunched FIA Formula Two Championship and has powered teams across touring car, rallycross and other international categories.

Today, mountune remains at the forefront of competition engine development. Every car on the GB3 and GB4 grids runs mountune power, alongside every FC2 Supercar and the NAPA Racing UK cars competing in the BTCC.

The same engineering knowledge also underpins our road car programmes. What we learn through competition informs the development, calibration and production of mountune performance products, connecting more than four decades of motorsport experience with everything we engineer today.

  1. 1980

    A one man Mini shop

mountune was founded by David Mountain in Maldon, Essex, initially building A Series Mini engines for private competitors in minicross, autocross and rallycross. What began as a small competition engine business established the engineering principles that continue to define mountune today.

  2. 1985

    THE MOVE TO FORD

A meeting with Terry Hoyle, then responsible for Ford’s works rally engines, opened the door to a relationship that would shape the next chapter of mountune. From this point, Ford competition engines became an increasingly important part of the business.

  3. 1987

    The break

Working with Robb Gravett, mountune developed and built engines for his Group N production saloon programme. Success followed quickly, with two championship titles helping establish mountune within Ford competition and bringing a growing number of customer programmes to the business.

  4. 1990

    British Touring Car champions

Robb Gravett secured the 1990 British Touring Car Championship in the mountune powered Ford Sierra RS500. The title represented a major milestone for mountune and established its Cosworth engine expertise at the highest level of British touring car competition.

  5. 1994

Group A and the works Escorts

mountune’s relationship with Ford developed into a works rally engine programme, including the 2 litre YB powering the Escort RS Cosworth. François Delecour’s victory at the 1994 Monte Carlo Rally delivered Ford its first works victory at the event in more than 40 years.

  6. 1998

    The Safari, with McRae

Colin McRae won the Safari Rally in the mountune powered Ford Focus WRC, delivering one of the defining results of mountune’s works rally programme. By this point, mountune had been developing and building Ford rally engines for close to a decade.

  7. 1999

    Formula Palmer Audi

mountune became the sole engine supplier to Formula Palmer Audi, beginning a relationship that would continue for 12 consecutive seasons. Every car on the grid ran a mountune built engine, demonstrating the reliability and consistency required of a complete one make championship.

  8. 2009

    Formula Two

For the relaunch of the FIA Formula Two Championship, mountune was responsible for the build, supply and support of every engine on the grid. The turbocharged 1.8 litre Audi based units produced approximately 500 bhp and were developed for the demands of a single specification international championship.

  9. 2010

    Original equipment on the RS500

The limited edition Ford Focus RS500 marked an important step in mountune’s relationship with Ford road cars, with a mountune intercooler fitted as original equipment. It demonstrated how engineering developed through performance and competition could be applied directly within a manufacturer production programme.

  10. 2014

    EcoBoost

Development expanded across Ford’s EcoBoost engine family, bringing mountune’s engineering experience to a new generation of road and competition applications. EcoBoost technology subsequently became central to both mountune performance products and racing programmes.

  11. 2017

A title with a boxer engine

Ash Sutton secured the BTCC Drivers’ Championship in the Subaru Levorg, powered by a mountune built 2 litre turbocharged boxer engine. Developed specifically for the programme, the engine demonstrated mountune’s ability to apply its expertise beyond its traditional Ford based platforms.

  12. 2021

    GB4

mountune was appointed engine partner for the GB4 Championship, extending an existing relationship with MSV as engine partner to GB3. The programme brought mountune power to another complete single seater grid, with the inaugural GB4 season beginning in 2022.

  13. 2025

    New cars, both grids

The introduction of new machinery across GB3 and GB4 brought a new generation of mountune engines. GB3 adopted a normally aspirated 2 litre producing 280 bhp, while GB4 moved to its own normally aspirated 2 litre package, continuing mountune’s role as engine partner across both championships.

  14. 2026

    Where we are now

More than four decades after mountune was founded, competition remains central to what we do. In 2026, mountune power has already helped secure three BTCC championships, alongside the British Hillclimb Tin Top Championship, while every car competing in GB3, GB4 and FC2 continues to run with mountune power.

The engineering behind these programmes also supports our work with manufacturers and the development of mountune performance products, connecting what we do today with the experience built through more than 45 years of competition.

The art of winning

The Art of Winning represents more than our history in competition. It is the engineering discipline behind everything we produce. From a championship engine to an OE programme or a performance product, the same focus on development, validation and continuous improvement applies. More than 45 years of competition has shaped that approach. It continues to shape what comes next.
